13th November 1917 ~ Harris Leeming

Harris was the youngest of six children born to John Leeming from Sawley and Ann Grange from Bewerley. The marriage was registered Jan-Mar 1875 in Pateley Bridge.

His father was a driver of the stationary engine at the quarry, John his older brother also drove engine’s he was working at Derwent and Ladybower reservoirs from 1903 to 1912 he was living at Birchinlee, which does not exist now, these reservoirs were used for practising with Lancaster aircraft and the bouncing bomb for the Dambuster raids in WW2. John on the 1939 Register became a Sub Inspector of Works for Metropolitan Water Board Reservoir No 2 at Sunbury-on-Thames in died in 1954.

Joseph his brother born 7 Jul 1881, signed up in 1915. James William was also an Engine Driver.

Harris had many relations named after him.

He joined Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment 16480 on 8 Oct 1914 and in big letters on his papers it says 13 Nov 1917, however his grave at Pateley Bridge states 27 Nov 1917 and lots of other documentation states other dates.

20th October 1914 ~ George Elliott

Does anybody recognise him.

These are the details

Sergeant George Elliott 6547 18th Hussars Age 38. Son of Mrs Sarah Barfe of 6 Railway Cottages, Millfield Road, Pateley Bridge, Harrogate. This has been taken from https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/872490/elliott,-george/

This would make his birth around 1876, I have found documentation that states he was born Kirby Underdale (a different spelling corrected to this).

I have found a Sarah Barfe nee Elliott in Pateley Bridge,  but she was born in 1864 Kirby Under Dale, she married a Thomas Barfe in Harrogate 25 Jun 1887. 1911, 1891, 1881 and 1871 census found not 1901. Update 1901 Census found under Balfe.

Is this her, did she have a child at the age of 12.

He is not mentioned on the Pateley Bridge War Memorial.

On his soldiers Effects it is noted the monies went to John his Grandfather.

He enlisted on 15th August 1914 with the 18 Hussars as a Sergeant number 6547 noted as died of wounds on 20th October 1914. On the Soldiers’ Effects it states On or Since.

This mystery has now been partially solved.

He is listed on the 1881 Census with his mother aged 1 month, so his age on the grave registration is wrong, image of the entry, but no proof where this came from. His mother was 17 when she had him and later went on and Married Thomas Barfe/Barugh/Balfe in 1887.

With this new information, I have managed to trace him on the 1891 census still living with his grandparents.

The 1911 census has him in Tidworth, with the 18th Hussars as a Corporal.

On the 1901 census, he is working as a Waggoner on a farm in Heworth, aged 20 with his birth as Bugthorpe (Buckthorpe). His surname is listed as Ellutt on Ancestry, correction done.

His birth is registered Apr-Jun 1881. A baptism of 28th April 1881 at Kirby Underdale.

So many tree’s have so much wrong information, I am just so glad that he has been found.

Never believe all you read and never trust other tree’s.

This is my Tree link.

Another mystery is Sarah Edith Brown, she is with her Grandparents Thomas Barugh and Sarah Elliott at The Railway Cottages, Pateley Bridge, on the 1939 Register. Her parents are Esther Mary Barugh the only daughter of Thomas and Sarah and John William Brown.

On the 1939 Register it is noted that the surname for Sarah Edith has changed to Murray 3rd July 1945 in KRV area, so far I can find no marriage or any death with all combinations of name.

From 1940-1945 she is still at Railway Cottages, but then moves into 12 Greenwood Avenue in 1947 with her Mother and brother Thomas, she is not listed with them in 1948 and her Mother dies in 1949.

Now with David Boyle’s comment, I have now found her living in Hawick and dying in 1990 aged 78, the main clue on the death information for Scotland is that they have the Mother’s Maiden Surname which is Barfe.

12th October 1917 ~ Walter Brown Ingleby

Walter was born to William and Sabina Brown Ingleby nee Brown, one if six children. His birth was registered Jul-Sep 1893 in Pateley Bridge, he was born in Glasshouses. His father was a Coachman.

In 1901 they are living in Glasshouses, on the 1911 Census his name is Brown Engleby, looking at the image it does say Walter Brown Ingleby, the many tree’s that are on Ancestry do not have this census, so at least I have made a difference here. They are living on Old Church Lane, Pateley Bridge

He joins the Household Cavalry and Cavalry of the Line Household Battalion as a Trooper 2319 at Pateley Bridge.

On this day he is presumed killed in action.

This gravestone is at Holy Trinity Church, Dacre, I went and photographed this, this morning. His name is on the very bottom which is hard to read along with Annie.2017-10-12 13.03.30

10th October 1917 ~ Ernest Edwin Richmond

He was the middle son for William and Elizabeth Richmond nee Marshall birth registered Oct-Dec 1897 in Pateley Bridge. He has two brother’s and sister’s.

On the 1901 census it states he was born at the Knott, they are living at High Harefield Farm.

This is the reason why I delayed this as I could not find him on the 1911 census. He is with his Uncle Richard Holmes transcribed as Homer, Ernest is Ernest Edwin Richard. Richard and Mary run the Royal Oak, Pateley Bridge. The amount of corrections that I have had to do just to this one record is a joke. For example – Housekeeper should be Innkeeper, Assisting in the Crouines should be Assisting in the business.

Ernest signed up with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in Keighley a Private number 26752.

He was killed in action in Belgium, on his effects it states Mother Elizabeth 22.1.18 and then Wid & sole Elizabeth dated 1.11.19 however his father does not die until 1926. If anybody has the answer to I would love to know.

He is remembered on the Tyne Cor Memorial Panel 9 also on his grandparents gravestone at Pateley Bridge.

9 October 1917 ~ Richard Harker

Richard was born to John and Betty Harker nee Hannam, late 1895, his birth was registered Oct-Dec of that year.

Betty died when he was 3 years old. He was looked after by his eldest sister Fanny who had married Thomas Edward Webb, they lived at 7 Eastville Terrace, Harrogate.

On the 1911 Census, he is with his Uncle William Rathmel – the surname has been transcribed as Harley – who now runs the Yorke Arms, Ramsgill.

He enlisted in Liverpool. With 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, 24693. Formerly 32838, Liverpool Regiment.

It is noted on the Army Effects that he is presumed dead.

He is remember on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 54 to 60 and 163A.

His Grandfather was James Harker who ran the Yorke Arms, Ramsgill (Yorke Estates).

9th October 1917 ~ Harry Brown Waring

Image

Harry born to John Brown Waring and Eliza nee Pounder lat 1895 his birth was registered at Pateley Bridge Oct-Dec 1895.

The four son for Eliza and first son for John. John and Eliza had a further two girls.

In 1901 they are living in Bridgehousegate his father is a welder in the stone quarry, William Pounder his half brother is living with them, but he was killed 4 Oct 1916.

It looks like he signed up on 15 April 1915 with The 1/5th (Territorial) Battalion West Yorkshire as a Private 1740/200336, Harry had not joined up with the original eight, but he was in the group photograph.

I need to purchase the book Harrogate Terriers by John Sheehan, as there is an account of Harry on page 95 which can be found on the internet, but other pages are not viewable so there must be more on what he did.

This is the extract “Harry appears to have been a large man and the invaders clambered out of the sap before taking him on.” This was from 9.55am 28 Sep 1915. If you google Harry’s full name you will find the link.

He was killed in action at the Battle of Passchendaele in the Field, on this day 100 years ago.

His name is listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 42 to 47 and 162.

9th October 1917 ~ James Edwin Swires

James Edwin also known as Edwin, birth registered Oct-Dec born 1894 in Pateley Bridge, the only son of Tom and Harriet Swires nee Irvin. They went on to have four girls. In 1901 they are living at Mount Pleasant Farm, by 1911 Edwin was a Butcher’s Apprentice at Ann Summersall’s.

Edwin signed up on 10th August 1914 as a Private 200332/1735 with 1/5th Battalion West Yorklshire Regiment, his service papers are intact. On his medical page it is noted that he is 19 and 324 days, which would mean he was born on 30th September.

During his service he was wounded and gassed twice at Ypres in 1915.

He was killed in action at the Battle of Passchendaele in the Field,  on this day 100 years ago.

He name is listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 42 to 47 and 162.

His sister Mary married Edwin Grange who was killed on 24th September 1917.

24th September 1917- Edwin Grange

As always when I start these mini tree’s to remember those that died 100 years ago, my first place to look is on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and this one was slightly different.

CWGC entry https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/840450/grange,-edwin/#&gid=null&pid=1

You may think there is nothing wrong with that information, no there is not, until you discover the full details.

So I enter Edwin’s date of death into my tree, a few items pop up, including an image of his effects, this has a widows name Mary H, so a start, I then check to see if I can find a marriage and yes it confirms her name Mary Swires, no middle name, but that is a start. The marriage was registered Oct-Dec 1916 Pateley Bridge.

I then looked on the 1939 Register hoping it will give me more information about her, unfortunately no Lawcoch, but I did find a Lowcock, who was married to a Harold, her DOB noted as 7 Jul 1898, on the GRO a Mary Hilda Swires is registered Jul-Sep 1898 at Pateley Bridge, this is what I needed. I then look for a marriage between a Grange and Lowcock, the marriage was registered Jan-Mar 1922 at Pateley Bridge (her name was Crange), no children found.

For further confirmation for Harold is that he is mentioned in the 1971 Birthday Honours “Harold Lowcock, MM. For services to local government in Ripon and Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire.”

So this confirms her name is Mary not May and Lowcock not Lawcock. Also this was written after 1922. They must have moved again as they are not living in Market Terrace in 1939.

Now to find his parents and hopefully siblings.

As I have a databases of the census records, I look at the 1901, as if he married in 1916 I would say he was born 1891-1896. No Jack Grange with a son Edwin, I did find a John Grange with an Edwin and 5 siblings, the mother’s name was Emma. Edwin’s birth is noted as Low Fold and they are living at High Fold. I notice that the first child a Brydia aged 11 and the mother is aged 33, so a chance a marriage could be found in 1888/9.

A marriage for a John William Grange and Emma Wilkinson registered Apr-Jun 1889 Pateley Bridge. Now to find the children.

Brydia found registered Jan-Mar 1890 and then Edwin registered Jul-Sep 1892, this is near his age noted on the image above.

So if you know any different, please let me know. One thing that is correct is his service number, shame no sign up papers to see when he joined up.

I have not found records that his parents lived at Pinfold, I have found a Pinfold Close in Glasshouses.

Mary Hilda Swires’ brother James Edwin Swires was also killed on 9 Oct 1917.
